More kiddisms chapter 2

A few more that I forgot to write yesterday
The other day Annie was in trouble for something, so I got down in her face to give her a stern talking to, and she kissed me right on the nose. Now how am I supposed to be stern when she does something like that?
The other day when I was in the shower Annie got herself dressed. As in she took off her dirty outfit, found a suitable outfit and put it on (correctly, without help). Alex can’t even do that.

More Kiddisms

A few recent kiddisms that made me chuckle.
The other day, when I was putting the girls down for a nap (a 2 hr one!) Louisa was playing around in her bed, which was apparently bugging Annie, because Annie leans over and whispers: Louisa, STOP IT!
At lunch yesterday, Louisa starts singing “the itsy bitsy spider” which frankly was the cutest thing I’ve ever heard. As soon as I join in she stops. “no mom, Louisa sing it”
Just now: we had a little gangsta rap goin on the mp3 player (cause I’m so funky – pfth) and both girls came up to me and said “I like this song!” and started bopping away. Maybe I should lay off the Coolio.
Who knows what will they say next…
No, I haven’t started getting ready to go to the beach yet.

I’m going to the beach

In one week we’ll be at the beach!! Have I started packing yet? Making lists? Charging camera batteries? Nope. Why not? Let me count the ways…
MP3 player
Email
Blog.
Re-organizing pre-k curriculum
Dishes
Mama… kiss? (how can you say no to that?)
Calling the doctors office
Must bake cake (heaven knows we can’t go 24 hours without baked goods in this house – my family has it rough I’m telling you)
3 kids
must make cards for Kate
Cold beer and crocodiles (the book I’m reading)
American Idol – I should boycott since my favorite is gone
A reading list 3 pages long (no, I’m not exaggerating)
Laundry – she says as she sits barefooted next to the computer because she has NO clean socks.
Pre-school
You know my house looks like a bomb went off.
Maybe tomorrow…

Refueling

Thank goodness for weekends. On Friday I was seriously at the end of my rope with those yahoos. But I had a nice break. Jory watched the girls on Saturday so I could hang out with my mom and Alex, then on Sunday my mom came over to play with the kids so Jory could have a break from the kids. Now I feel like I can do this for another week.
So far so good. It’s only 10 am on Monday though. We got a long way to go before we get to another weekend. Plus this week I have to start getting stuff together to go to the beach. Very excited.

Totals

3: beds that the girls stripped yesterday
8: items pilfered from the fridge without permission (fruit: 3, yogurt: 5)
35 minutes: the length of time I attempted to enforce naptime. (down from 1 ½ hours yesterday)
52: times I had to tell Annie to put her head down during “nap time”
4: times I had to chase the girls away from the television.
10: whining, crying, screaming fits over nothing (Annie)

This is what a relatively good day looks like in my house.

I gotta say, all this terrible two-ness that the girls are doling out this week has made Alex look pretty good. He never really went through that phase (or maybe he just got away with more because I was a sleep deprived mother of twins). He’s always been pretty trustworthy. Thank God for reliable first borns who know when to tell mom what the others are getting into.

Hopeful

So yesterday wasn’t exactly the highlight of my mothering career. Does it show? Jory took mercy on me when he came home and whisked the kids outside so I could regain my sanity. Sadly, a major rain storm hit shortly after they went out, so everyone was confined to the front porch. But that is not my problem. Incase you were wondering - yes, they drove Jory crazy too.
I woke up super early this morning (before 6:00) and couldn’t go back to sleep. So I did what I’ve always daydreamed of doing – I played with my scrapbook stuff in complete silence while the kids slept. Oh it was wonderful. I made some cards for the lady who owns my store. I sliced my thumb open with my paper cutter and accidentally bled all over one of the cards. Oh well, cover it with a little ink and no one will notice right? Other than that, it was complete bliss.
Maybe today will be better.

Terrible two’s x 2

Sucks. Seriously. On Monday morning when I went to get the girls out of bed they had both stripped completely nude at some point in the night. Louisa pooped before she took off her diaper, Annie waited until the diaper was on the floor to poop. Thanks.
The girls have decided that they are anti-napping. Well, almost. They took naps yesterday and it only took them 1 hour to fall asleep. (only) I have tried everything! Running them ragged about 30 min before naptime, then turning on quiet music, rocking the whole 9 yards. You name it, I’ve done it. No naps. Which means they’re tired and cranky from about 3:30 – 7pm when I get sick of it and put them to bed. Can I trade these two in on a newer model? 2 for 1 discount? Please?
Have I mentioned Annie’s stubborn streak? How about the defiance running rampant? I’m ready to hand them over to James Dobson and say “you know so much about parenting – you fix them” because I’ve tried everything. EVERYTHING.
Eh, at least it makes good blog material.
Hope your children are behaving better than mine.
Here’s a dandelion for ya. Well part of one anyway. I lost all the detail when I made it small enough to fit here, so I did a little creative cropping. You get the idea.

Grandma visits

We enjoyed our weekend visit with Grandma Peterson. We had lots of fun bopping balloons around, playing tickles, and reading stories.
Noteworthy moments from her trip:
In the girls’ room, there is a small bookcase between their beds. I put it there knowing that they’d eventually use it to climb out of bed (which they are capable of, but never do for some reason). I never expected them to use it to climb into each other’s beds. Friday night I put them to bed, and an hour later they were still talking and giggling. So I finally go in to check on them. Annie had climbed into Louisa’s bed. After a hearty chuckle, I put her back in her bed thinking she’d go right off to sleep. Wrong. 20 minutes later, she’s back in Louisa’s bed, this time completely naked. Lovely. I do my best do give her a stern lecture, and throw her back in bed. But the fun doesn’t end. 20 minutes later, Louisa is in Annie’s bed, crying because she’s exhausted and Annie’s bugging her. (Oh the irony). So being the smart mother that I am, I moved the bookcase. No more crib hopping in my house.
Here are some photos from our visit, these were taken on the playground at Maplewood elementary.

Observations

I’ve come to realize over the last few things about my kids. So here are my observations for what they’re worth.
Annie has been such a Daddy’s girl lately. I’d be a little jealous, but Louisa has been a total Mama’s girl the last few weeks, so I suppose it all evens out. But it’s hard not to play favorites.
My Annie is stubborn. As in - I’m not going to and you can’t make me – stubborn. Lovely. So here are some of the oh-so-fun stubborn quips from life with Annie.
1. You can put it in my mouth but you can’t make me swallow it. Seriously for like 10 minutes this kid will keep the same bite of food in her mouth. Yes, I tried giving her drinks, but she can swallow milk and keep the food from going down. Now that’s talent.
2. I don’t care if I am exhausted, you can’t make me sleep. Go ahead Ma, hold my eyes closed. See if I care. Ugh.
The best way to handle her is give her a direction, let her know what the reward will be, then ignore her until she does what I ask. I’m not about to be stuck in a power struggle with a two year old. Mommy don’t play that game.

Exhale

This last week has been so insane it’s not funny. The I-don’t-even-care-if-my-kids-are-dirty-insane. Yes, it was that bad. It’s funny how my one little thing totally throws my whole routine out of wack. Since it was Cathy’s last week in Toledo, we spent a lot of time with her and her parents, helping her get ready to go and that sorta thing. Yesterday was somewhat normal though *deep sigh* I spent a good 2+ hours cleaning last night and now most of the toys are picked up and back in their homes. But there’s still laundry, hair cuts for the girls, school for Alex, and spring pictures to take… have I mentioned my mother in law will be here this weekend and I have a project for the store due on Monday. (Which is almost done, and pretty stinkin cute if I do say so myself)
So life is getting back to normal I guess. At least my house is clean. (for now anyway)
Did anyone watch Texas Ranch House last night? It’s one of those history reality shows on PBS. The only thing it was missing was John Wayne, and it would have been perfect. I’m tempted to gush about how great it was, but I think if I do, my father-in-law will put me to work on their ranch. No thanks. So I’ll just say WATCH IT!

COSI and a sad goodbye

This was our friend Cathy’s last weekend in Toledo before moving out to the Chicago area. We’re definitely sorry to see her go, but excited to come out and visit her this summer.
For our little “going away party” she took us all to COSI (a science museum) on Saturday. We had a ball playing with the bubbles, splashing in the water tables (big surprise) and playing in the tree house.
So here are a few fun pics from our outing. (check the flickr badge for a few more pics)
