Weekend happenings

I think one of the cats had an unfortunate encounter with an SUV. There’s a dark smear out in front of our house, and the other cat (Lightning) is acting so pitiful. He acts like he lost his best friend or something. So unless he miraculously shows up, we are now the proud owners of one lonely little kitty. Which is fine, because frankly we didn’t want them to begin with.
In other news, Sue and Dick were in town this weekend. They came up for a bowling tournament, and met up with us for dinner. We had a great time catching up. They brought us some treasures from their “collection” including an old wooden school desk/chair combo. The kind like we had in college where the desk is connected to the chair, but it’s much prettier than anything I sat in during my college days. My other “treasure” is Dick’s marble bureau from when he was a kid. He brought it for the kids to keep their little collections in, but I promptly snatched it up for my craft area. It’s the perfect size to keep on my desk and fill up with my little scrapty odds and ends.
Other than that, it was a nice weekend. Good weather, happy kids, and relaxing. Doesn’t get a whole lot better.

All figured out.

Ok, so one of the reasons I keep this blog is to keep (and share) records of my children’s milestones. I have to remind myself of this truth so I don’t feel like a bragging mom. So this is a school related update for Alex, not a mom-brag session.
I might have shared this before, so bear with me – For a while now Alex has been building words with letter magnets, usually 3-4 letter words. Sometimes he asks for help, other times he gets it right all by himself – he’s not so much into invented spellings, but they do show up from time to time. Anyway, the other day I figured he was ready for an easy reader book – the kind that uses repeated words over and over. Not surprising, but he did super with it. I hear him in his room “reading” “cars are big, trees are big, houses are big…” He gets so excited about words and language. I love that. The other milestone that I thought I’d share relates to math. That boy loves his addition. He loves adding with a number line (find the number that’s 2 more than 4), and he really likes using manipulatives to add. Oh and don’t get him started on number stories. He’ll sit and make up stories for half an hour by himself (there were 3 cars at the bakery, then 3 more came, and then there were six, but one decided to go to the lake house, and there were five…) I’m trying to get him to make number sentences (4 + 5 = 9) in addition to his “math play”.

Life update

It was beautiful here this weekend. 70-80 degrees all weekend, no humidity, no bugs, just nice, happy sunshine. We had ourselves a nice little picnic in the yard on Saturday (read that - I was too lazy to drag everyone inside to eat, so I just brought the food out). Sunday we spent a good part of the day doing an overhaul on the garage. So what’s new in the Peterson household? The girls have become very independent lately. As in don’t you dare try to help me or I’ll UNDO the work you’ve just done and redo it myself. Which basically means that the bedtime routine that used to take 15 minutes now takes 45. Mom gets toothbrush out, girl whines, grabs toothbrush, returns it to toothbrush corral, pauses, grabs the same toothbrush, and proceeds to get it ready to brush her teeth WITHOUT help. Nice.

(for Aunt Carol)

She's been itching to see the girls in their easter dresses. Well I didn't take any on easter because they were just cranky. So here you go Carol! (Annie = pink)

News.

It’s official! Next month all five of us are taking the train to Montana to visit Jory’s brother. I’m slightly nervous about taking the kids on a 31-hour train ride. But I was really nervous about the 22-hour car ride to Jory’s parents in October, and they were champs. This time they get to walk around, no seatbelts confining them for 6 hours at a time. Plus northern Montana – glacier country. Jory and I have never been up there. We’re very excited. The kids seem to be excited about the prospect of riding a train for a long time. They’ve been playing with Thomas and the other tank engines non-stop since we started discussing our trip.
In other slightly less exciting news, I signed Alex up for safety-town yesterday. The local fire station / police station teaches this class for kids entering Kindergarten. At first he’s like “yeah mom, I know all about that stuff.” But as I explained that he’ll get some one-on-one time with a REAL fire engine, and REAL police men he got really excited. It doesn’t start until June, but I think it’ll be a hit – if the kid doesn’t talk their ears off…

more snow

If April showers bring May flowers what does April snow bring? I'm not sure I want to know. (I'm ready for spring)

Tunes

It’s been a while since I’ve done a post about music. It’s such a huge part of our lives in this house, we’re always listening to something. So I’ve come up with a list of my current top 20 songs divided into two groups, the classics: songs that I’ve loved for more than two years or so, and my current favorites: songs that are newer and I may not love them as much in a few years.
So here goes.
Classics: (In no particular order)
Bob Seger: Turn the page
Dave Mathews: Ants marching
U2: With or without you
INXS: Never tear us apart
Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven
Phil Collins: Against all odds (take a look at me now)
Aerosmith: Dream on
Rusted Root: Send me on my way
Billy Joel: She’s always a woman
Indigo girls: closer to fine

Current favorites:
Chris Daughtry: Wanted dead or alive
Michael Buble: Fever
KT Tunstall: Suddenly I see
Kenny Chesney: You save me
Nickleback: Rockstar
Rascal Flatts: Where you are
Sara Evans I give in
Sugarland: Just might (make me believe)
Will Smith: Switch
Gwen Stefani: Hollaback girl

Spring break

The kids and I have been at the lake for the last few days. My parents had some friends out from North Carolina and we decided to crash their party. No really, we were invited. I don’t know who had more fun, my kids, or the Gronzo’s. There was lots of tickling, story reading, fishing, and scrapbooking. In other words, there was something for everyone. Highlights include feeding the fire monster (he’s especially fond of the brush piles out at the barn), reading the same 5 stories over and over (and over) Mental note: the lake house needs more books. Alex’s first game of Battleship (he and Grandpa were on a team, and they won!!) and Alex to Mary, “we need lots of time to talk”

Easter weekend – brr.

So another Easter has come and gone. This one had snow. The news man said that this year it was colder on Easter than it was on Christmas. Nice. So here are some highlights from our freezing Easter weekend: Jory had Friday off, so we spent most of the day playing. We did a few art projects, and took the kids to run errands. Saturday we had our Easter lunch with my parents and my siblings, which was nice. The kids got to dye eggs, and had an egg hunt. (Pics to come eventually) Sunday was pretty low key. We wore our new Easter clothes to church, came home and put the girls down for naps, and played with our art projects some more.

Photo fix

I’ve been a total slacker in the picture department lately (so sorry). So here are a few from yesterday. The girls got to put on some more of their new spring wardrobe, and well, they were just too darned cute. So even though I had a to – do list a mile long, I spent most of the afternoon taking pictures. I actually got quite a few of the girls together before they just got too silly to cooperate (which is almost unheard of!). So here are some spring pix of my hooligan children. (That’s Louisa in the blue/green shirt)

Play date

Yesterday out of the blue my old friend Darlene called and invited us to a play date at the park. Well since it’s been close to a year since the last play date, it was time for another one. It was good to chat with her and Chris (her oldest), while my kids played with Anna and Johnny (her two youngest). We were soon joined by my mom and brother, and most of the Wurster family (another family from church). We had a ball chatting and catching up. My favorite moment came later as I was getting Louisa ready for bed, she told me she wanted to invite Chris and that lady (Darlene) to come to our house to play. Good times.
In other news, Jory and I have been scrapping fools the last two days. He’s been scrapping pics from his trip to Missouri a few days ago, and I’ve been working on well… whatever suits my fancy at the moment. Mostly layouts that will be given away to someone someday.
