Purge fest

My mom and I accomplished an amazing task. We sorted and reorganized my children’s collection of crapola. It took us all day, but we managed to purge all the broken toys/books, toddler toys, and general crapola that my children play with. The amount of junk in the kids’ rooms has been decreased by about 50%. Approximately 3 large garbage bags to good will, 1 in the trash, and 2 full boxes into storage. So instead of overflowing out into the room, Alex’s closet actually has room for him and the girls to play inside.
Then after all that went out, we redistributed the toy collections. Kitchen and baby toys went to the girls’ room. Cars and trains went in Alex’s room – which now has the floor space for him to spread out the train tracks because the kitchen stuff is gone.
Bonus: the kids are all excited about their new room arrangements, and are having a ball. Which means they aren’t bugging me. Nice.

Catching up

So we made it through Christmas. The kids got way too many toys, but that’s ok. They seem happy with what they got. There was only a little bickering over presents (which is a huge improvement over last year when Annie screamed and cried all morning long) I got an ipod with a docking center, which I love already. (Jory is jealous) Everyone seemed to like what we made for him or her. Overall it was a good day.
I’m a little sad that it’s over. No more Christmas music on the radio. Soon all the decorations will be put away, and it’ll just be cold and yucky winter. Yippee. There’s always next year right?
So last night my friend Karen from high school was passing through on her way home from visiting her parents. She calls me and says “the bus is getting off the interstate now! Come see me!” Without putting any thought into the matter, Jory and I threw the kids in the car (no coats or shoes – eek!) and drove over to where we thought the bus would be, Then we drove a little more. But we found her. We had a totally cool little get together in the mini van in the parking lot of Steak and Shake. Nice. Wish it had been longer than 25 minutes. But I’ll take it.

Peterson slang

A few funny slang words that have made their way into normal conversations around here, so I thought I’d record them for future reference.
Squish: hug
Smoochie: kiss
Happy time: the opposite of sleepy time, basically whenever we are awake it’s happy time.
Wiggies: tickle

Weekend wonders…

Another weekend closer to Christmas and what do I have to show for it? Not much I’m afraid. I spent most of Saturday baking Christmas cookies to give to Alex’s Sunday school teachers.
Friday my store owner called to tell me she’s closing the store after New Years. Major bummer. But an opportunity for change. She encouraged me to take my class to the other stores around town, and I think I’m going to. I have the contact information of all my “regulars” and I’m sure they won’t mind coming to a different store for our classes. But I had a $90 gift card that I’d gotten as payment for something, so I got to go shopping. $90 goes a long way when you’re only buying cardstock and stickers.

Play

11 days before Christmas. Are we scurrying around with last minute projects? Baking cookies? Wrapping presents? Nope. We’re pretending to be baby birdies at the park. And loving every minute of it. The fact that it’s 50+ degrees outside and we’re all wearing our spring jackets may have something to do with it.

Christmas dresses

It was warm out yesterday so I took the girls out for some photos in their cmas dresses. I got some pretty good ones, these are just some of them. Love the “squish” picture.

Crazy times.

So it was another typical holiday weekend in our house. That is, we were basically only here when we were sleeping.
Friday night we went to the annual office Christmas party. Instead of having it at the boss’s house as we normally do, we had it at the art museum. So instead of listening to a bunch of people I don’t really know talk about stuff I don’t really care about, I got to go around and look at all the neat exhibits. That was super fun.
Saturday I took the kids to Mom’s to bake cookies and run a few errands. We got a few dozen baked while the kids played. Then we went shopping and I found a cute little 4 ft pre-lit Christmas tree (sorry Dad, it’s fake), which of course the kids are fascinated with. But hey it fits in my living room, and makes me feel very festive. So there.
Sunday after church my mom took the girls for some special “girl time”. We took Alex out to lunch and to the library to kill some time. Then we went back to church for a Christmas party. Which, silly me volunteered to help with. Like one round of kindergarten wasn’t fun enough, I had to go and volunteer for a second round (did I mention there are 3 sets of twins in my group? And No, being the mother of twins doesn’t make it easier to tell other sets of twins apart) Ask me how fun it was to decorate cookies with 15 kindergarteners and the world’s most obnoxious frosting. Hopefully I’ll be smart enough not to volunteer again next year. But don’t count on it.

Productive weekend

We had a very productive weekend in the Peterson house. Friday night was a free babysitting event at the church, so we dropped the kids off, had dinner and did some Christmas shopping. The kids are now all set as far as gifts go. It feels good to cross that one off my list. Saturday Louisa and I ran some errands. We picked up some various Christmas related items.
Sunday after church we went to a Christmas tree farm to help my parents cut down a Christmas tree. It was really cold, but we had fun anyway.
Oh yes, and we (that is, I) picked kitten names – Thunder and Lightning. We just can’t agree on which is which – ha. But I picked those because they were gender neutral (Until they start having kittens I don’t care what gender they are). But we broke down and bought them some kitten chow. They weren’t crazy about the table scraps I kept trying to give them. So I guess that means they’re ours – but they’re outside cats.

Adopted (again)

What is it with us and stray critters this year? I told you all about Rover Joe back in May, I’m not sure I told you about Gimpy, he was around the time we left for NM, and wasn’t around when we got back. Well now we have Renn and Stimpy. They’re the cutest pair of kittens I think I’ve ever seen. They showed up on Wednesday night, and have been crying to be let in ever since. They’re very sweet; both have allowed me to pick them up. So they might be staying. Not in the house mind you. But I might let them hang out, and keep the mouse population down. I haven’t fed them yet, but I’m about to break down and give them something this morning. We’ll see. If they stay I’m going to have to give them better names. I have no idea what their genders are, but I’m thinking about Luke and Leia. Any suggestions?
So we have all the Christmas decorations up finally. Jory put our lights on the mantle last night. No tree yet. We probably won’t get one – Our living room just isn’t big enough to handle one more large object. If I can find a 2 foot one to keep next to the fireplace I might consider it – but that’s about all I can handle at this stage.
Did I tell you Annie has finally started going on the potty this week? She’s better at holding it than Louisa is – which I find slightly humorous. I was trying to avoid forcing the matter because I was afraid it would back fire. But she’s doing pretty well. I made a rule that diapers were only for sleeping, and if she really needed to have one, then she has to stay in her bed. This way she can have one if she really wants, but it’s not a pleasant experience. Seems to work, she hasn’t asked for a diaper all week.
