Mindless ramblings

It’s been a while since I just rambled, so bear with me.
Yesterday we had a mad purge session in our house. We went through room by room, got rid of all sorts of crap, and reorganized a little. Feels good to get rid of some clutter. Make some room for new clutter.
Alex has now had a week and a half of school. It’s going really well. I was looking at a chart of what things should be taught when during the kindergarten school year. He’s at the end of kindergarten level for language arts and math. Interesting. That means we have more time for fun stuff like art class right? Pfth. Actually it means we focus our efforts on handwriting (which has always been an issue), and we read lots of nonfiction books about rocks and fruit and what not. Unfortunately I still feel like I need to cover patterns and one to one correspondence (and all those other things my kid could do when he was 3) so I have stuff for his portfolio assessment at the end of the year. But the good news is, we can do it in one lesson and not spend an entire month on it. It also means I’m going to be hunting for harder curriculum here pretty soon. But I’m not complaining. That’s the point of homeschooling, right? To teach a kid at his own pace, and not the pace of the slowest kid in the class.
Anyway. Some kidisms to share. Funny Alex quote from the other day: after bonking his head, “I think I broke my brain”
The girls have been in to singing lately. Not songs I’ve taught them mind you, their own made up creations. They sound something like this “Ok Mommy, this one is going to be a sad song. She is so sad, she is so sad, she is so sad, because she dropped her blankie, dropped her blankie, dropped her blankieeeeeeeeee…” So sweet, and yet rather comical at the same time. Gotta get that on video.

Hi! I’m back… we had internet issues last week, so I hardly spent any time on line, hence the lack of blog posts. You wouldn’t believe how productive you can be when the internet isn’t trying to seduce you.
So just for kicks, here’s a brief run down of what went on while I was unplugged. Painting is DONE. The porch, the deck, the trim, the touching up. Done. All done. Just short of 2 months, thank you so much.
New pics of the girls. Alex not so much. But here’s one of them together that I love despite the fact that Annie has her eyes closed. And one of just Anne that made me chuckle.
Alex is in Kindergarten. We’ve made it through our first week together as teacher/student. It was good. Really really good. I got my letter of exemption from the school district, and we are good to go. The little guy totally read an entire book by himself last week (minus two words that he needed help with)Also a little bit of scrapping out of the way. I’m hoping to get a little more caught up with my scrapping before the Christmas projects roll around. Still a long way to go.

End of Summer Sha – bang

Seriously. Where did summer go? I honestly have no idea, but back to school is here, so we’re frantically running around trying to have as much fun as possible before everyone else has to go back to school. (Insert evil laugh here).
So anyway. Yesterday we had a play date with my friend Aimee and her little guy Chase, who is the same age as my girls. We went to the park for a picnic, which was super fun. Slightly hot, but fun. Then last night we went to family movie night at the church. There were probably 8 or 9 families there, we all piled in the sanctuary and watched Charlotte’s Web. We hadn’t seen it before, but we really enjoyed it. So today, we’re headed to Plummer pool, which is perfect for little kids, but we’ve never actually been there. I’ve been meaning to go all summer, but for some reason we just haven’t. Aimee said it was really empty earlier this week, so we decided to meet up there again today.
So other than that, life is getting back to normal. I still haven’t finished painting my porch/trim. And I’m ok with that. I did manage to do a little scrapping both yesterday and the day before. My first layout took me about 20 minutes. All that creative energy that had been bottled up for about a month just came spewing out and poof it was done. Making serious headway on my curriculum for Alex’s school. So I feel like we can officially start school here when everyone else does. (Especially when all our friends go back to school, and there’s no one left to play with!)

Hocking Hills

So the last few days we have been on vacation in southern Ohio. My mom and I took the kids down to Hocking Hills state park (Jory had to work, poor baby). We spent our days hiking, swimming, playing cards, reading, and finding as many different playgrounds for the kids as we could. It was sooo nice after the stressful end of July to just play and not worry about a bulging to – do list. I didn’t get many pics of us hiking (heavy woods + cliffs = dark pictures), but I still managed to snap off a few to share.

Annie peaking at Mom, pretending she's not being ornery.

We were also able to spend some time with my mom’s family. I made it to the Simms family reunion, which I haven’t been able to attend in 7 years I think. Met up with some distant cousins that I haven’t seen in 17 years that were a hoot. They had lots of fun teasing, and playing with my children. I didn’t bother taking pictures because Rylan (distant cousin # 1) played the part of the photographer, and took 600+ pics that he promised to share. So, if and when those show up, I’ll share those.

The other side.

Well we’ve successfully completed our week at VBS. I can’t believe how fast it went! We had so much fun in the preschool class. My co-teacher was awesome, the kids were super sweet (although slightly wiggly). Good to know my kids aren’t the wiggliest ones out there.
So, what else. I’m almost done painting the trim on my house. I’ve been working on it in the mornings this week before it gets really hot out. (yes, this is the same painting project I’ve been working on for about 3 weeks now, I’m shooting for the world record).
Anyway. Tomorrow we’re going on vacation in southern Ohio. I’m looking forward to hiking, playing in the pool, and catching up with Harry Potter. But alas, there is much to be done before we can leave. The whole packing for 4 people thing, always a joy. Especially at the last minute. I’d also like to tidy up my house a little bit. The phrase “hit by a tornado” doesn’t quite do my house justice.
