Oh this is bad.

Annie is now capable of changing diapers.
Yup. You read that right
“Mommy, Clean diaper. Annie do it.”
She’s changed her own diaper and her sisters today. Well, everything up to putting the clean diaper back on. We’re still working on that part.
This is bad. Very bad.

Normal weekend.

As I sit here composing this entry, I’m racking my brain trying to come up with a clever way disguise the fact that my weekend was not interesting in any way shape, or form. Ohh, she thinks, tell them a space alien landed in the back yard. They came in and stole all my peanut butter. (It was recommended by the local yahoos) Ok, no. The truth of the matter is I went through my typical weekend routine, chores on Saturday, church and scrapbooking on Sunday, no space aliens. Just people chuckling about the unfortunate peanut butter incident. Thanks for asking.
I picked up a book at the library called The Encyclopedia of an Ordinary life. Don’t remember who wrote it, but I read about it on someone else’s blog. It’s the kind of book us scrapbookers enjoy. It’s full of ordinary stories about her life (all alphabetized, hence the title) complete with illustrations. Totally cracks me up. In a spurt of inspiration last night I get this great idea, “Hey! I could make my own encyclopedia for our family, complete with pictures, and patterned paper, like it’s own little scrapbook. The inspiration genius taunts – oh come on, you know you wanna tackle another huge project. A cruel joke if you ask me. So on the to-do shelf it goes. I’ll get to it in about 20 years.
What else. Oh yes. I had a big fat dork moment this weekend; I can’t believe I’m about to share it. I always get a chuckle at reading other peoples TV obsession stories. Believing, in part, that I am too good to get obsessed, especially about a television show. (You can see where this one is going) American Idol. Chris Daughtry. “Wanted – Dead or Alive”. That’s all I’m saying. If you saw it, you know what I’m talking about. If you missed it, well… sucks to be you. (that’s such a high school phrase, I can’t believe I just used it) So here comes the dork part of my story. I’ve never been a huge Bon Jovi fan, aside from the fact that we share the same birthday (which incidentally is on Thursday, don’t forget) but after this kid sang this song, I’m all of a sudden a huge fan of Bon Jovi. I can’t get this song out of my head. You bet your buttons I added it to my playlist.
Cause I’m a cow-boy, on a steel horse I ride
Dork.

The Peanut butter bandit

The Peanut butter bandit
What do three hungry yahoos, a 5 lb tub of peanut butter, a secret hiding spot and a busy mom (who’s attempting to cook dinner) all have in common? Use your imagination. Wait, it gets better.
So I’m cooking dinner (a rather large, complicated meal if I do say so myself) and I think “boy those kids are quiet, I better go check on them” so I walk to the hallway, and there they are, blissfully gathered around something, and I think “aw, how cute, they’re happily playing together” so I go back to make sure the potatoes aren’t burning. A few seconds later Alex walks into the kitchen looking like he just swallowed the pet canary. I think it’s rather odd, but hey I gotta get the biscuits in the oven. Finally Jory comes home and nabs the bandits. That’s when the peanut butter really hit the fan. He got the mess cleaned up, and gave them an oral discourse in the benefits of not nabbing the peanut butter. You know the girls played their “look at my cute pigtails” card for all it was worth. But alas, there was no love for the pigtail pirates in the Peterson house.

disregard the annoyed expression on her face.

A few random kid observations incase you cared.

I think my children have watched the veggie tale “Lord of the Beans” a few too many times. Alex runs around yelling “it’s bacon!” (which incidentally is quite humorous) and the girls are now fluent in the language of the elders in the raspberry forest. – If you’re not familiar with the movie, the elders blow raspberries at each other. Yes, the girls run around blowing raspberries at each other, and at us when they don’t like our parenting. I should be irritated by their lack of parental respect, but frankly it’s too danged funny.
Louisa has been all about the pigtails this week. It’s one of those hairstyles I just shouldn’t do, cause my kid is more adorable than normal, and she totally knows it.
Sadly I have no proof, because every time the camera pops out she has a mad dash for the door. Soon my friend, I will capture her new ‘do, for all the world to see.
Annie. My dramatic one. I am trying really hard not to label her a drama queen, but golly she’s dramatic. Her new thing is screaming bloody murder for no reason at all. I admit it worked a few times, worried Mom rushed to her side to find out the cause of her woe, only to find out that Mickey Mouse was stuck. But alas, I’ve learned. No more dropping everything to rescue Mickey for me.

Cabin fever!

Jory and I are both feeling a touch of the cabin fever this week. Jory’s got the “I wanna ride the Harley blues” and I just want OUT. I’m tired of looking out the window and knowing it’s too cold to play outside (for wimps like me that is) why can’t it be spring?? I’m ready for flowers and green grass and the weather being warm enough that Jory can take the kids outside after dinner so I can CLEAN. I don’t think it would help me to take a trip or get out of the house, unless I was gone for about 6 weeks and I came back and everything was magically green.
Blech.

Weekends are fun

Whoever invented the weekend was a very smart person. Weekends are so fun around here, this last one was no different… Alex and I ran our chores on Saturday, nothing terribly exciting, except that we both got our hair cut (which was sort of an adventure in itself…) We ended up coming home and building a fire in the fireplace on Saturday evening because it was really friggen cold (I think the low was 6 degrees – brrr)
The highlight of my Sunday was coming home from church, throwing the kids in bed, putting on jammies, and scrapping all afternoon at the kitchen table with Jory. I’ve been working on the same layout for about 3 weeks. Well lets be honest, when I say “working on” I mean it’s been in sitting on my desk collecting dust, staring me in the face for 3 weeks. But now it’s done, and I’m happy with it…

That’s more like it!

As far as days go, yesterday was a pretty good one. My kids were all on their best behavior (for the most part anyway) so I was super productive. My house is spic and span (well compared to the sticky mess that it normally is), I baked a cake, and gave everyone a bath (except for Jory). That my friends is what a good day looks like in my house. To top it off, Papa Johns brought me dinner, and we watched my current favorite show: American Idol!
Now on to the more mundane chatter…
I figured out how to keep the girls diapers from disappearing from their behinds… Tee-shirts that snap at the bottom. They can’t undo the snaps, so even if they try to pull off the diaper tabbies (which they have) the diapers stay put. Sweet.
Anyone else watching the Olympics?? They are so cool! Of course I never stay up to watch the good stuff, but I’m still enjoying them nonetheless. How cool would it be to say I was the best in the world at something. Oh sure I could say something totally lame like “I fold my towels neater than anyone else in the world” but a) no one would really care, b) I couldn’t prove it because as soon as I fold a towel some little yahoo comes along behind me and unfold it for me c) they don’t give out gold medals for folding towels. So I have to live vicariously through those kids on tv that can all ski way better than I can. (considering that I don’t ski at all)

Good weekend

I had a great weekend. Friday I went to a stamping party with some friends from church, I gabbed a bunch, ate a bunch and stamped a little HA! It was lots and lots of fun. I don’t get enough time to just socialize with my friends from church, so it was nice to catch up and not to have to worry about Jory being annoyed that he had to wait for me after church.
Saturday was Jory’s birthday. After we dropped the kids off at my parents in the morning, we dropped by the Harley shop to pick up Jory’s present. Other stops for the day included a trip to the BIG library downtown, lunch at Crackerbarrel, a trip at the other Harley shop, and desert at Bob Evans.
Sunday was the typical church-Sunday School-lunch routine, I spent most of Sunday afternoon playing while the girls slept and the boys entertained themselves. I made some cards for Kate at the scrapbook store, and took some pictures of Jory’s Harley gear for an upcoming layout he has planned. Here’s one of my favorites:

FYI

Putting diapers on backwards, does in no way deter toddlers from pulling them off. Especially if they’re poopy.
*Side note* Tomorrow is Jory’s birthday, and since I don’t usually post on Saturday’s, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JORY!!

Better

So yesterday was a much better day. I think the girls were feeling better. Their noses weren’t as runny, and Louisa had her typical “You know you wanna play with me cause I’m cute” smile back. I also had a class at the Scrapbook store. It was called “fast and fabulous cards” - 6 cards in less than 2 hours. I had a pretty good turn out, which I was pleased about because my last class bombed. It was really nice to get out, meet some other scrappers, share my (limited) knowledge about crafting and just gab about life for a while. Plus when I got home, the kids were in bed, and American Idol was on! Ha!

3 kids, free to a good home

So I think I mentioned the other day that the girls were a little sick. Did I mention how annoy sick children are? Whiney clingy screaming over nothing children – I have 3 at the moment. 2 of them are somewhat legit, and Alex, well… everyone else is doing it right?? I got absolutely nothing accomplished yesterday. No I take that back. I put on a clean shirt, and I made an apple crisp (YUM) but that’s about it.
Did I tell you that Alex can now unlock the door to my bedroom? Our room is off limits, because that’s where all my craft supplies are (like permanent ink, paint, exacto knives etc). Frankly I don’t want my children playing back there. Yesterday Alex unlocked the door, let Annie in, and shut the door and locked it again. If I hadn’t heard him playing with the lock, she could have been there a while… I might have to go out and invest in a key lock for that door, because the current lock isn’t cutting it.
Then there’s Louisa. She had two good days of no potty accidents. Well it apparently was a fluke because she’s back to having accidents everywhere. What’s worse is she refuses to wear a diaper. I put one on, and she yanks it off the second I turn my back (along with her sweatpants). Aside from taping her diaper on her, I’m not sure what to do

Do you know why Alex’s oatmeal won’t obey him?

That is the question of the weekend. Saturday morning eating breakfast Alex belts out “why won’t my oatmeal obey me???” It was good for a laugh for Jory and me anyway.
So my weekend…….. We were supposed to get 4-8 in. of snow this weekend. Seems like Katie, my favorite weather girl, was wrong. We got NONE. Oh sure, it snowed but none of it stuck. Suits me just fine, less to shovel. The girls have had pretty yucky colds this week. Yucky snotty hacking colds. They stayed home from church yesterday with Jory. We actually watched the Superbowl last night. Well half of it anyway. I can’t remember the last time I watched one, it was probably in college. Well when I say watched, I mean that I read a magazine for most of it, tuned in for the commercials, and laughed at Jory’s “commentary”. No I don’t know who won, I’m not even that sure who was playing.

Potty update.

I mentioned the other day about starting to potty train Louisa, well we fell off the wagon for a few days last week, but I’m proud to announce that we are back on the wagon and doing well. Except that the “one at a time” thing didn’t work. If I put a diaper on Annie, she takes it off, so I don’t bother. Neither girl is really doing anything on the potty, but they’re also not having accidents either. Which means that they hold it until I put a diaper on at nap time, then they let loose. But I’m sorta encouraged by the fact that they know when to hold it.

Louisa was so cute just a second ago, she comes to my chair and takes my hand. “come on Mommy! Alex’s room!” Sadly I have a cranky Annie in my lap, and a blog entry to finish. Fortunately her brother took her up on her offer to play.

Do you ever feel like making a big fat mess??? I mean not an ordinary creative mess that comes from creating a scrapbook page or baking a cake, I mean a BIG mess, where your finished product is well, a mess. (I call it nurturing my inner preschooler). I have been so tempted lately to just make a big mess. Here I’ll show you an example of what I’m talking about.
  • Elsie flannigan
  • makes the cutest messes I’ve ever seen. Every time I “try” to make a mess, I end up with the same ol’ thing, a neat and ordinary creation. I’m just not a good mess maker. One of these days though, I’m going to make a really good cute mess, and when I do, I’ll let you know.

Signs of the times… and other random news blips

Gotta love the technologically minded preschooler. Here are some Alex-isms related to technology that made me shake my head:
Jory was listening to some mp3’s on the computer, and there was a song that Alex wanted to hear. So he tells Jory, “this song is in MY PLAYLIST!!!”
The other day we were playing, and Alex pretended to take my picture. He then proceeded to show me the image on the back of his “camera”. The other day I was taking pictures with a non-digital camera, and he got really mad that he couldn’t see the picture that I’d just taken.

On a side note, did anyone watch the State of the Union address last night? I didn’t. I have in the past, but I was mad that American Idol was cut short, so I boycotted. Anybody wanna give me the 30 second version?
Oh and the girls had their 2 year check up yesterday. Both girls are around the 25th percentile for weight (up from the 10th at their last check up – yahoo!). Annie (I think it was Annie) is about an inch taller than her sister – Louisa was in the 10th percentile for height, and Annie was around the 25th.
